The Seer of Spring, Groundhog!🦫

A groundhog or often called Monax Marmot is a rodent that can predict spring’s arrival. North American people celebrate Groundhog Day every February 2nd to see Groundhog's prediction of spring’s arrival.

In North America, people believe that if the groundhogs come out from the tree and people can't see their shadows because it's cloudy then spring is near. Otherwise, if people can see their shadows then winter will go on for the next 6 weeks. This tradition is believed to have been carried out since 1887.

The groundhog is an animal from North America. This animal belongs to the squirrel family Sciuridae. The groundhog has a very different body shape and muzzle than other squirrels. The average groundhog body length is 45-61cm, while the weight of the groundhog can reach 6 kilograms in winter and will drop to 3 kilograms in spring.

This herbivorous animal is a reliable soil digger. Groundhogs can dig up to 18 meters (60 feet) deep. They do this thing to make nests in the ground. Usually, they make nests to hibernate for the winter. This habit usually overwhelms farmers because it damages their gardens.

However, Groundhogs’ habits also provide benefits to farmers, it loosening the soil and improving soil quality. Indeed groundhogs have cute bodies and faces, but people cannot keep these mammals since they can act aggressively toward their owners.
